New Vernon History
The history of Far Hills begins with a man named Evander H. Schley, a land developer and real estate broker from New York state purchased thousands of acres in Bedminster and Bernards Townships in the 1880s. The origin of the name Far Hills is from 1887, when Schley’s brother, Grant, and his wife, Elizabeth, arrived by horse-drawn carriage to see Evander’s farms. Elizabeth remarked on the beautiful vista of the “far hills,” thus giving the name to the place before a village was built. The Borough of Far Hills was incorporated in 1921.
